THE BAND

Jack Vocals: Hair of an angel and voice akin to that of a sensually tuneful banshee, Jack sounds like ‘a group of goblins ripping apart a fizzy drinks machine’ - (Nightshift Magazine). A strong frontman, dominates the stage and both excites and engages with the crowd.

Dave Guitar/Backing vocals: Driving force behind Rue the Day, Dave forges deep, heavy, passionate riffs. Mysterious past which he refuses to talk about, rumoured to involve fire breathing tours around Armenia.

Rich Guitar: An absolute riffmaster, Richs fingerboard has had to be made fireproof, he plays with such passion. Full on metal, decked with tattoos, the heavier the better for the hard living axe man.

Joe Bass: Quiet and unassuming outside of gigs, Joe wields his bass so angrily that it literally weeps. Hair and beard said to have been swapped with Satan for the soul of a former lover. He doesn’t talk about the incident.

Mark Drums: Stick wielding flurries and an insatiable appetite for metal. Double bass drum rolls, flying sweat and a totally rock n roll attitude make him a living legend.

Rue The Day - Surface Unsigned Festival 2008- Reviews

Stage 1

Wednesday April 9th 2008 @ The Rainbow, Birmingham
Words by Stephen Hudyba

Traveling from Coventry to play this years Festival, Rue the Day gave a first-rate performance of their intense Metal sound.  They’ve got a more mainstream sound than the bands that preceded them (yet they are by no-mean pop!), with dark melodies, atmospheric intros and Jack showing that he can carry a tune just as well as he can roar; it all made for an excellent sets worth of strong, individual tracks.  The band has been chosen to feature on the soundtrack of Brit-Horror-Comedy ‘Hotel Caledonia’ and an extreme sports DVD, which is further proof of the quality of their material. This rare writing ability combined with their tight, measure performance meant Rue the Day were one of the standout bands of the evening.

Stage 2

Tuesday June 24th 2008 @ The Medicine Bar/Factory Club, Birmingham
Words by Stephen Hudyba

The third band of the evening was Coventry based five-piece Rue The Day. They got a contemporary take on a sound that successfully mixes elements of Metal and Classic-Rock making for a direction that’s fresh and original, but also one that should appeal to any fans of the above mentioned genres. Once again it was the combination of an intense live performance and some well-written, distinctive material which made them standout, and the Factory Club seemed to agree, with the band getting one of the best reactions of the evening

Regional Semi-Final

Sunday August 3rd 2008 @ The Barfly, Birmingham
Words by Stephen Hudyba

The third band of the evening was melodic Metal five-piece Rue The Day. It’s a loud and aggressive noise yet their material is packed full of ideas and hooks – some heavy, infectious riffs and sing along choruses – creating a uniquely compelling sound well above that of your average Metal band. Live they were very strong, playing with energy and a rarely seen level of intensity (especially front man Captain Jack), they were the first band of the evening to really get the crowd going and their performance undoubtedly ranked amongst the evenings best

Regional Showcase

Sunday August 31st 2008 @ The Rainbow Warehouse, Birmingham
Words by Stephen Hudyba & Hannah Krepski

One of the heaviest acts of the evening Rue the Day delivered a tight engaging set of their raw, contemporary Metal sound. Bursting with aggression and energy, it’s a direction that is often attempted yet rarely done this well.  The band have written some uniquely strong material that went down very well with their fans and the uninitiated alike, and made for a deservedly excellent response from the crowd.  Live they gave one of the performances of the evening – with all reflecting the intensity of their music in their onstage performance (especially Captain Jack who was once again one of the strongest frontmen of the evening).

National Showcase

Saturday September 13th 2008 @ The Birmingham
Carling Academy 1 (Main Stage)
Words by Stephen Hudyba

The next band was Coventry based five-piece Rue The Day.  Their sound is a tidy mixture of contemporary and classic Metal. Dark, aggressive and bursting with raw energy, it’s metal as it should be done complete with dark bass-lines, driving riffs, heavy beats and winding guitar solos.  The band has a powerful stage presence and a uniquely engaging manner – there’s a real charisma and energy in the way they perform that sucks in metal lovers and the uninitiated alike.

The Machine is the debut album by midlands based Rue The Day. As debut albums go this is a fantastic effort. From the intro until the end of the cd it is highly charged, heavy and full of great songs and promise. Title track The Machine sounds like a "best 0f" Metal. It is rare for any album not to have any weaker tracks, even rarer for a debut album. Rue the day have achieved this and their future is sure to be a great one, watch out for their live gigs, already legendry in reputation. All aspects from vocals, guitars, drums and bass are tightly knit and combine for a five star musical treat. There are moments of darkness on an album that also includes sing-along anthems, Ridin' the Storm and the title track are the best examples of this. Rue The Day recently got to the national showcase of the Surface Unsigned Festival, they performed tracks from both The Machine and new material. I cannot wait for the new material to be released as they have set themselves high standards with their debut album. After being played on his radio show on BBC Radio 6. the legendry Bruce Dickenson gave the following review {on The Machine album} "Very, very good it is too".

A review on http://cd.ciao.co.uk/

Rue The Day were wicked. Really talented musicians. I was surprised they didn't finish in the top 4 to be honest. I'm not into metal in a massive way, but it was obvious that they were very good at what they did. They should do well regardless of this comp!
